![]() The incest part was completely mind-boggling to me through the entirety of what I watched. The first is the normalized incest and the second is the lack of addressing the sexual assault. There are two things that really ate at me about the drama. I really didn’t expect an actress of Zhang Ziyi’s caliber and prestige to pick such a predictable and bland screenplay. Her childhood sweetheart, the crown prince, Xiaoqi, the antagonist from an enemy country, and even Xiao Qi’s loyal general, Song Huaien. As Mary Sue dramas are, all the men like her in here. It becomes convoluted and I feel like they pull every kind of dirty cliche. The drama revolves around her and Xiao Qi strengthening their relationship as they’re thrown many hurdles because the evil empress is afraid of the power he could have as it’s clear as day he makes a better leader than her own son, Crown Prince Zilong.Īll of this sounds okay so far but there is a tornado of toxic, exhausting situations involving rebellion, a lot of betrayal and affairs, poisoning the emperor to render him- a puppet, villain in love with female lead, etc. Although she is young, she is well-mannered unlike other kinds of female leads that often cause trouble. The silver lining here is that she doesn’t pick fights with him or throw tantrums at him. Xiao Qi is nicknamed as God of War as he has fought and won many battles for the nation and is fiercely loyal.īecause this is a drama, Wang Xuan initially has the wrong impression of Xiao Qi and dislikes him. They have always expected to be married to each other but Wang Xuan ends up being forced to marry Xiao Qi, a prince by name but not by blood. Her childhood sweetheart is her own cousin, Zitan (I will get into this later). While the empress is desperate for her to marry the crown prince, Wang Xuan’s heart lies elsewhere. She has always been the favored child, everyone dotes on her especially the emperor. Wang Xuan is from the Wang Clan in which the tradition is that the women from that clan are always supposed to be the future empress. She starts off as an innocent, young, spoiled but kind teenager (Mary Sue here we come!) and gradually becomes disillusioned by all the corruption and conspiracy behind her family which she had always thought were great people. Her mother is the king’s sister and her father is the queen’s brother (just wait there’s more weird family dynamics). This is a female lead-centric drama and as expected, Zhang Ziyi plays the heroine, Princess Wang Xuan, who is the niece of the king and queen both by blood (which was a little strange). ![]() Just when you think they can’t seriously be using such a predictable plot device, they do. Unfortunately, the actual story doesn’t live up to any of the money spent and cast hired. The cast itself is filled with many big names aside from Zhang Ziyi which means it’s an attention grabber. They built whole cities in indoor studies with running rivers. The production cost of this drama is out of the world. I was very surprised when I first heard about ‘The Rebel Princess 上陽賦’ because Zhang Ziyi has never acted in a drama before, usually opting for the large screen. (Disclaimer: I dropped this drama around 35-45 episodes in.) I’m trying to figure out where to start with this drama.
